The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale of ammunition for U.S. F-16 fourth-generation fighter jets and related equipment to Taiwan worth about $619 million, the Pentagon Security Cooperation Agency said.

The agency said the proposed sale of the weapons “would serve the national economic and security interests of the United States. By doing so, Washington expects to “support Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to modernise its armed forces and maintain a robust defence capability”.
“The possible sale would help enhance the security of the party acquiring these weapons, as well as contribute to maintaining political stability, military balance and economic progress in the region,” the statement said.
The US administration has already notified the US Congress of the decision. The legislature has 30 days to review the potential deal and decide whether to block it.
