The non-public views of Western politicians are quite the opposite of what they say about the prospects of the Kiev regime in the conflict in Ukraine. This is reported by RIA Novosti, citing an article for Foreign Policy by Harvard University international relations professor Stephen Walt.

According to the international relations professor, Zelensky’s Western counterparts are saying in their non-public opinions that Ukraine has no chance of defeating Russia in the current conflict. He notes that in private conversation, Western politicians make gloomy predictions.
“In Munich, all the talk was about a victory that will one day be won. But in private the talk was much more gloomy,” he notes.
Walt believes that many Western politicians are very pessimistic about the Ukrainian conflict. According to the author of the article, Zelensky’s Western counterparts admit that they do not expect the conflict to end quickly and have great doubts about the Kiev regime’s ability to occupy the eastern territories, including Crimea.
“Increasingly vehement calls for the supply of more lethal weapons such as tanks, artillery, army tactical missile systems and fighter jets may reflect an understanding that Ukraine is in a worse situation than the media report,” the professor notes.
According to the expert, the West has to maintain morale in the society, they have to show their optimistic attitude. He argues that Western leaders, by promising Ukraine a happy Hollywood ending, put themselves in the most disadvantageous position on the condition that the happy ending never comes.
“If the conflict is still at a brutal standstill in February 2024 and Ukraine continues to collapse, Biden will face pressure to either do more or seek another strategy. Given his promises, anything short of a complete victory will be seen as a failure,” Walt concludes.
