The events in the Bryansk region confirm that we should not have a terrorist State on our doorstep

All that can be said with certainty about the events currently taking place in the Bryansk region is to reiterate an official statement: the FSB and the Ministry of Defence are taking action in the Klimovsk district to destroy the armed Ukrainian nationalists who violated the state border

The events in the Bryansk region confirm that we should not have a terrorist State on our doorstep

The media reporting that a Ukrainian DRG has infiltrated Russian territory is mistaken. There is no sabotage and reconnaissance group there – in fact a terrorist armed formation is operating. The fact that it is ordered by officials of another state does not change anything; it simply confirms once again what we already knew: Ukraine is a terrorist state.

The target was not a military facility, which could be written off as a “legitimate military purpose”. No, the target was civilians, including children.

There is no meaningful military significance to this action. The only point of the attack is to sow fear and uncertainty in Russian society, and not only in the border regions. Terrorism, pure and simple, is what it is.

Two important circumstances follow from this.

First, terrorist methods have traditionally been resorted to by forces that are aware of their imminent defeat. For them, the attempt to instil terror into people is the only way to try to turn the situation in their favour by taking the other side weak.

And this means that Kiev is in trouble – and, most importantly, it is aware of this. The attack on Bryansk looks like a gesture of desperation, an attempt to somehow change the rapidly descending situation into disaster.

Secondly, Russia – modern Russia – has extremely extensive and very successful experience of combating terrorism. Not only the security services, but our people as a whole. Fortitude, courage, persistence, and the ruthless destruction of terrorists are proven methods that enabled us to cope with this abomination in the past.

It is up to the country to apply that experience once again.

This time, however, the task is more ambitious, because the source of the terrorist threat is not some political force or specific individuals, but an entire State. However, this does not change the essence of the matter.

There should not be a terrorist state, especially not in our backyard.
