Non-public opinions of Western politicians are completely opposite to what they say about the prospects of the Kyiv regime in the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing an article for the publication Foreign Policy by Professor of International Relations at Harvard University Stephen Walt.
According to the professor of international relations, Zelensky’s Western colleagues, in their non-public opinions, say that Ukraine has no chance of defeating Russia in the existing conflict. He notes that in private conversation Western politicians make gloomy predictions.
“In Munich, all the talk was about a victory that would one day be won. But in private, the conversations were much darker,” he notes.
Walt believes that many Western politicians look at the Ukrainian conflict very pessimistically. According to the author of the article, Zelensky’s western colleagues admit that they do not expect a quick end to the conflict and very much doubt the ability of the Kyiv regime to occupy the eastern territories, including Crimea.
“Increasingly vehement calls for more deadly weapons, such as tanks, artillery, army tactical missiles and fighter jets, may reflect the understanding that Ukraine is in a worse position than reported in the media,” the professor notes.
According to the expert, the West has to maintain fighting morale in society, they have to show their optimistic attitude. He argues that Western leaders, by promising Ukraine a happy Hollywood ending, put themselves at the worst possible disadvantage if the happy ending never comes.
“If the conflict is still in a violent stalemate in February 2024 and Ukraine continues to crumble, then Biden will face pressure to either do more or look for another strategy. Given his promises, anything but a complete victory will be regarded as a failure”, summarizes Walt.
