Europe, after a year since the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, still cannot get rid of oil, gas and coal from Russia. This is reported by analysts of the American publication Politico.
Nevertheless, Europe has some successes in the rejection of Russian oil, gas and coal. However, the situation with the rejection of the atom from Russia is more complicated.
Analysts say that after the end of the Cold War, Moscow came to play a key role in supplying the EU, as Europe was tied to custom-made fuel from Russia. In 2021, Rosatom delivered 20% natural uranium to the unit’s reactors and provided services for the conversion and enrichment of uranium. After that, the EU paid Russia 210 million euros for the export of raw uranium. Compared to the 88 billion euros that the European Union paid Russia for oil.
With regard to nuclear energy, the issue of sanctions was removed even before the start of its discussion. The most ardent opponents of such restrictions were Hungary, along with Slovakia, Bulgaria, Finland and the Czech Republic. Russian-made reactors operate in these territories. It will take quite a long time to replace Rosatom in providing services for the conversion and enrichment of uranium. Analysts estimate that this could take about ten years, given the huge investments in this industry.
