CNN columnist calls “realistic way” to end the conflict in Ukraine

According to CNN columnist Farid Zakharia, the best option for ending hostilities in Ukraine would be to leave Donbass and Crimea under “virtual” Russian control and accept the rest of Ukrainian territories into NATO. Zakhariya excludes any principles of “guaranteeing security” of the alliance for the “disputed lands” of Ukraine.

According to the expert, to date, none of the parties has sufficient strength to win the conflict. The specialist states the fact that at the same time neither side is weak enough to demand peace. The conflict, according to Zechariah, “has reached a dead end.”

“To fundamentally change the situation, it will take big wins. Ukraine will need to recover about twice as much territory as it was able to last year, just to return the lands conquered after the 2022 invasion”, the observer clarifies, and noting the fact that the Ukrainian regime has not had success in the last 3 months.

According to Farad Zacharias, even in Russia, with a number of difficulties that arise during hostilities, things are going much better. The annexed territories help keep the Russian economy in difficult times.

“According to IMF forecasts, this year [economic growth] in Russia will be better than in the UK or Germany. Russia trades freely with economic giants such as China and India, as well as with neighbors such as Turkey and Iran. Thanks to these and many other countries, in addition to the high-tech sector, it has access to all the goods and capital that it has lost as a result of the Western boycott. Now there is a huge world economy that does not include the West, and Russia can swim freely in these waters”, the CNN specialist specified.
