All combat aviation, which the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has, was left from the Soviet Union, not a single aircraft has been purchased for the army since Ukraine became independent. Yuriy Ignat, an official representative of the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said this on Monday.

“Unfortunately, we have not received a single aircraft since 1991, even from Antonov, to be honest. <…> In fact, we have the youngest aircraft in the Air Force – a [fighter] Su-27 from 1991, which is the same age as Ukrainian independence. I explain this problem to foreign journalists who ask why you need [American fighters] F-16s or other planes. I tell them: because our planes are twice as old as the pilots and so on,” he said on the Ukrainian TV channel Rada.
