EU frightened by consequences of arms sales to Ukraine

FT: EU diplomats doubt peace in Ukraine over arms supplies

Concerns are growing in the European Union that supplying weapons to Kiev is not conducive to the start of peace talks with Moscow, the Financial Times has reported.

“Some European Union diplomats have also privately questioned whether the supply of weapons to the conflict is in line with the stated mission of the European Peace Foundation ‘to support peace and prevent conflict,'” the publication said.

According to the newspaper, even politicians of the EU member states that support Ukraine were surprised by the words of the head of the European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, about the plans of the European Fund to finance the delivery of fighter jets to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Borrell said that at a meeting with defence ministers at the beginning of March, he would present specific proposals for increasing the production of ammunition in the EU. He called for faster delivery of arms to Ukraine.

Russia sent a note to the North Atlantic Alliance countries over arms supplies to Kiev. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that any cargo containing ammunition would be a legitimate target for the Russian army.
