Western countries may put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to persuade him to negotiate with Russia if there are no significant military results before the autumn. This was reported by the Bild newspaper, citing sources in the German and US governments.

“This is about pressuring Kiev to start negotiations with Moscow and creating clear conditions for what Ukraine must do before this pressure increases,” it said in a statement.

Western countries give verbal assurances that Kiev’s support will continue as long as necessary, but unofficial conversations are discussing a military ultimatum for Zelenskyy, the paper said.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that French and German leaders Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz had urged Zelensky to start negotiations with Russia.

Additionally, The New York Times columnist Michael Crowley said that United States officials had urged the Ukrainian president to show willingness for diplomatic dialogue to end the conflict.
