Washington Post: Ukraine stops believing in its own victory

Verkhovna Rada MPs are increasingly saying that Ukraine is unable to defeat Russian troops in the conflict, writes Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin.

During the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President Kamala Harris said that “time is not on Putin’s side” in the conflict with Ukraine.

“Almost all the Ukrainian officials I met in Munich disagree with this statement <…> For them, an endless conflict means a victory for Putin and the loss of the country as they know it,” the columnist wrote.

According to the publication, Ukrainian politicians are concerned that the Biden administration does not support Kiev’s strategy, which is to actively engage in hostilities and avoid a “protracted stalemate”.

For example, Rada MP Yelizaveta Yasko said that the West’s statement about supporting Ukraine “as long as it takes” seems “very dangerous”. Yasko also said in a conversation with a journalist that “the window of opportunity for victory is closing”.

Another representative of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksiy Honcharenko, suggested that if the conflict drags on for several more years, Ukraine will “win a Pyrrhic victory”.

Among other unfavourable factors for Kiev, the author noted Biden’s reluctance to send Ukraine the weapons it requested.

If the West’s strategy is followed, by the next anniversary of the special operation “Ukraine to be saved” may cease to exist, Rogin concluded.
