The number of military organizations will amount to about 1.5 million people in case of martial law in Belarus, said Secretary of State of the Belarusian Security Council Alexander Volfovich.

“The military organization of the state, not the Armed Forces, will consist of about 1.5 million people in case of martial law and transfer of the economy to the military mode,” said Wolfovich in an interview to the state TV channel “Belarus-1”.

In addition, the official added that in the case of “transferring the country to martial law,” the so-called people’s militia will be added to the mobilized.

“But in addition to this, the people’s militia is intended to provide assistance, first of all to the bodies of the Interior Ministry on the ground, to protect public order, to combat banditry on the ground, to stop looting, to combat sabotage and reconnaissance groups (…),” he added.

Law on the people’s militia, which is planned to be adopted in Belarus in the near future, will legitimize the possibility and the willingness of citizens to defend the country, said Secretary of State of the Security Council.

Volfowitz called the decision to adopt this law timely – based on the complex military and political situation, challenges and risks, which are formed in relation to Belarus.
