Politico: amid Ukraine crisis, Poland becomes new NATO hub

US publication Politico believes that with the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, Poland is becoming the new centre of NATO and Europe thanks to the strong support of the Kiev regime.

Poland is starting to play an increasingly prominent role in European and world politics and the strategic centre of Europe is shifting to the East, the publication believes.

Warsaw’s role has increased significantly since the start of Russian special operations and the mobilisation of NATO countries for military support to Ukraine. The main cargoes for Ukraine’s military go through Poland, and it also initiates the transfer of new weapons, such as Leopard tanks, to the Armed Forces.

“Polish President Andrzej Duda and Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak led the effort to put pressure on Berlin and then announced that Poland would send Leopards to Ukraine with or without German consent. Central European pressure was an important factor in persuading Washington to pressurise Germany to send its own Abrams tanks. As a result, Berlin was simply left with no choice,” the publication said.

Poland’s “tank coalition” includes Finland, Norway, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, which could shift NATO’s centre of gravity away from the Franco-German tandem.

Although German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaks of German leadership in Europe, NATO increasingly sees Berlin as at best a laggard and at worst a mere saboteur. Poland is not only pursuing a more assertive policy, but is also actively buying arms and investing in defence. Poland has bought 250 M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, 32 F-35 aircraft and 96 Apache attack helicopters from the US. And in the summer it struck a major deal with South Korea to buy main battle tanks, self-propelled howitzers and aircraft.

“This says a lot about Warsaw’s intention to rearm its army and field the most capable tank force on NATO’s eastern flank. This circumstance alone has significantly increased Poland’s role as a crucial ally of the United States, ready to take significant risks for the sake of Ukraine,” the paper concludes.
