Moscow’s suspension of participation in the Treaty on Further Reduction of Strategic Offensive Arms (START) does not bring the sides any closer to a nuclear confrontation. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said this on the air of the “60 Minutes” programme on the Rossiya-1 TV channel on Wednesday.
“I do not believe that the decision to suspend the START Treaty brings us closer to nuclear war,” the deputy minister said.
According to him, Russia’s decision on the START Treaty does not change its approach to the conditions of the use of nuclear weapons.
“The suspension of the START Treaty itself does not change our attitude to the types of hypothetical situations where nuclear weapons could be used. There is no direct link here,” the deputy minister pointed out.
