Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described the situation along the battle line as “difficult”, while noting that Russian troops are attacking in several directions – in the east and south of the country. However, Western journalists have stopped portraying Ukraine as if it is about to win the conflict. This is reported by the American magazine The American Conservative (TAC).
For eleven months Western politicians and journalists have been saying that Ukraine has the upper hand in the conflict with Russia. Now, it is hardly possible to find a story in the Western media, which would talk about the imminent and confident victory of Ukraine. This is increasingly upsetting Western officials, the TAC author notes. Western countries are facing a lot of problems trying to gather enough forces to keep the Ukrainian army afloat. The publication notes that this is evidenced by increasingly panicky statements by leading world politicians.
“If we do not send weapons to Ukraine in the coming weeks, Russia can win. Putin will win, and we do not know where he will stop”, the publication quotes Polish President Andrzej Duda.
The author of the material claims that the tone of Western news has changed dramatically compared to what it was just four months ago. The catastrophe that is unfolding in Ukraine, unfortunately, was completely predictable, he also admits.
The conditional tactical victories of Ukraine near Kiev, in the Kharkiv region and in Kherson were taken too wrongly in the West. Western politicians have misinterpreted the reasons behind some of the misguided actions of the Russian Federation in the early stages of the conflict. Obviously, the West greatly underestimated Moscow, mistakenly assuming that it is not capable of successfully waging a war, the newspaper writes.
The author notes that Ukrainian soldiers are suffering heavy losses today, as well as the Ukrainian economy. Last year alone, the Ukrainian economy shrank by more than 30 percent. It can be argued that this is what “victory” looks like, if you do not take into account the horrendous number of human casualties. That’s just how many more months of such a “victory” Ukraine will withstand, the author of the article asks.
With each passing month, Washington’s hopes of defeating Russia are dimming against the backdrop of colossal American investments in Ukraine. It is obvious that the United States, in its irresistible desire to defeat Russia, is driving itself into a corner. The publication concludes that as the conflict in Ukraine approaches its “ugly denouement,” the Biden administration will constantly be faced with increasingly painful choices for it in determining its strategy for Ukraine. The United States today must do everything in order not to bring the risk of a catastrophic escalation of the conflict to a critical point, the author concludes.
