The United States says Ukraine will not be able to become a NATO member

Ukraine is unlikely to become a NATO member but can count on partnership from Europe and the US, writes Bloomberg columnist Hal Brands of the US Department of State’s Foreign Affairs Council.

Brands believes that it is unlikely that Ukraine can become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. He recalled that countries with territorial disputes cannot join NATO.

According to Brands, the Ukrainian government also has a plan B: maintain ties with the West without officially joining the alliances and build its own strong army. However, the journalist notes that the strengthening of Ukrainian forces could be hindered by economic difficulties due to the conflict.

“Ukraine is likely to remain an economic ward of the West, with Washington and its allies financing the country’s defence for the foreseeable future,” the expert writes.

The end of the conflict in Ukraine could be the beginning of the West’s long-term commitment to Kiev, Brands concluded.
