DM: Britain’s chief of general staff threatened to resign over cuts to army funding
Britain’s Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Patrick Saunders, has threatened to resign from the Ministry of Defence if military funding continues to be cut, the Daily Mail reported.
According to journalists, friends of the British general believe Sanders may leave his post in protest as the “perverse” policy of cuts is forcing troops to operate with outdated equipment.
“He’s not one to start pounding the table and threatening to leave, but he has drawn the line and told himself that only resignation is next and Ben Wallace knows it. It’s hard to remember when the army has been in a worse state. Personnel are downsizing, housing problems and low wages are undermining morale, and there is a widespread perception that the Army is the poor cousin of the three branches of the armed forces and has suffered greatly while the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy have flourished,” the publication quoted its own source as saying.
Earlier, Sir Patrick Sanders said that sending tanks to Ukraine would “put a hole” in Britain’s reserves and make it difficult for London to meet its NATO commitments. The chief of the General Staff also noted that there was concern in the British Armed Forces over this decision.
During a speech at the Munich Security Conference, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that London would be the first to supply the Kiev regime with long-range weapons and would also provide Ukraine with as much military equipment in the coming months as it did in the entire year 2022.
