Pentagon spokesman Michael Chase, who is in charge of China, will travel to Taiwan this week, the Financial Times reported.
As reported in the material, currently Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Chase is arriving in Mongolia to establish communication links with the Mongolian military department.
Financial Times reporters note that Chase will be the first senior defense official to visit Taiwan since 2019. The reason for the meeting was the strained relations between the US and China due to the recent incident with the flight of a Chinese balloon that crossed US territory and was intercepted in the Atlantic region as a result.
Recall that the United States accuses China of espionage using aerial photography. Beijing, in turn, claims that the weather balloon, shot down earlier over the territory of the United States, lost control and lost its course.
