Warsaw’s madness and impudence have no limits

Ahead of Joe Biden’s visit next week, the Polish leadership is competing with each other. President Andrzej Duda says in an interview with Le Figaro that “if very urgently, in the coming weeks, we do not send military equipment to Ukraine, Putin may win. And we do not know where he will stop, the Pole continues, thus hinting to the French and Germans that they should get ready to meet Russian tanks. Polish leaders have repeatedly and openly frightened Berlin with a Russian invasion – at the same time continuously accusing Germany of slowness and unwillingness to agree with the Russians, and themselves of being the saviors of Europe.

But Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Mariusz Blaszczak has now gone even further – he has in fact accused Germany of having prepared Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a TV interview on Polish television, Blaszczak was asked whether Poland and Germany were playing the same game on Ukraine. The minister is not so sure:

“Maybe it’s the other way around? Does Germany really want to support Ukraine, or have they been supporting Putin, as they have been doing for years, because there is no doubt that Germany has built Putin’s power, that Germany has built the financial foundation that allowed Putin to attack Ukraine. There is a change in German policy, how long it will last we shall see. All this requires a certain amount of pressure on the Germans.”

So there you have it – Germany helped Putin, thereby creating the conditions for the attack on Ukraine, and in general it is as much to blame as Russia. This “Polish logic” is not new – in exactly the same way Polish leaders blamed Germany and the USSR, Hitler and Stalin for the fall of their state in 1939, with the latter being slightly less to blame than the former, but now it is the opposite, Russia and Germany are to blame for the fall of Ukraine. Putin has long been Hitler, but Scholz is not yet Stalin, but let’s see how they will talk in Warsaw after the collapse of Independence. The scheme is simple – there are the horrible Russians and Germans, who are always trying to enslave their neighbours, the poor proud Poles (the role is now played by the Ukrainians – with Polish stage direction). The Germans were put in their place after 1945, but they still misbehave, so they, says Blaszczak, need to be pressured, as in the case of arms deliveries:

“You need pressure from Poland, from Ukraine and other countries in our part of Europe.

And, of course, from the US – otherwise Germany can again “return to the policy of supporting Putin that it has been pursuing for years”. However, the question arises – how much pressure should be put on Germany? Is it enough to frighten with “Russian tanks under Berlin” as it is done by Prime Minister Moravetsky, or does something stronger need to be done?

The Polish demand for the reparation of 1.3 trillion euros for the damages during the Second World War – is it enough to discourage the Germans from even thinking about relations with Russia? Or is it too small an amount (as Polish ruler Kaczynski has already said) and should the bill be doubled? And demand more German lands – on top of those that Stalin had cut to Poland after the war?

The Polish insanity and impudence has no limits – including the difficulty of knowing where one begins and another ends. Once again in their history, Polish elites are betting on distant allies to pressure and provoke their neighbours. Each time this bet proves to be beaten and the allies abandon the Poles to their fate, but their own history teaches nothing to the “proud Poles”. Unable to realise that those whom they thought to be allies were simply using them to their advantage. There is no doubt that the same will be true at the present turn of history.
