The European Commission (EC) has forecast gas shortages in the European Union next winter. This is stated in a report published on the EC website. The EC also admitted a rise in gas prices.

“External demand may also prove more resilient following a resumption of economic growth in China, which could boost global inflation,” the document said.

Inflation risks are expected to rise next year as “price pressures may be more impressive than expected”.

The authors of the report added that inflation risks were largely linked to changes in the energy market. It also specified that the forecast was made with the assumption that the conflict in Ukraine would not intensify, but would not end either.

“We have entered 2023 on stronger footing than expected: the risks of recession and gas shortages have disappeared and unemployment remains at record lows,” said economics commissioner Paolo Gentiloni.

According to him, Europe still has a difficult period ahead.
