NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has no plans to extend his term of office, which expires this September. This was announced to the DPA agency by the official representative of the alliance, Oana Lungescu.
According to Lungescu, the current secretary general “has no intention of seeking another extension of the mandate.” Stoltenberg has served as Secretary General for almost nine years, he has already extended his term of office three times, the DPA notes. The last time Stoltenberg’s term was extended in March last year, until the end of September 2023.
According to the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, there is an informal agreement among the Alliance members to extend Stoltenberg’s term until spring 2024 so that he can chair the NATO 75th anniversary summit in Washington next April. This publication reported citing sources in diplomatic circles.
At the end of January, Politico wrote that many NATO members see the continuation of Stolnberg’s term as real. Other representatives insisted on the candidacy of a woman, and some allies leaned towards greater regional diversity.
