The granting of candidate status to Ukraine for the EU membership has raised “unrealistic expectations” among its citizens. This opinion was expressed by the observer of the German newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten Knut Krohn commenting on the results of the recent visit of Volodymyr Zelensky to Brussels.

According to the journalist, granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate was a political decision. Kiev’s path to Europe will be long” and there are many obstacles because of which the process may drag on for many years, Krohn warned.
He recalled that in order to join the EU, a functioning legal system and the principle of separation of powers are necessary, and the observance of democratic rules at all levels must be guaranteed. Also, the economy must be developed to an extent that it would be able to compete on the domestic market after accession.
Europe will not be able to abandon these criteria, because the functioning and survival of the European Union depends on them, Knut concluded.
