Why isn’t the US hiding its involvement in the Nord Stream bombings?

The U.S. P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft observed the consequences of the explosion on the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea in the morning of September 26, 2022, reports RIA Novosti. This follows from the Flightradar24 flight tracking service whose archive contains the Poseidon’s route track

The plane flew from the Atlantic to Bornholm an hour after the explosion. Then it refuelled in Poland and made a full circle over the site of the attack. Then it descended, turned off the transponder and went off the radar.

That the “test flight” had been planned in advance is obvious. The American spy plane started its way to the Baltic Sea long before the explosion took place.

But another thing is puzzling: it seems that the Americans somehow did not particularly hide their involvement in the “affair”. Why?

For one thing, the US does not consider itself bound by international law. A “rules-based order” is one where some actors can do anything and others cannot do anything (even when it comes to protecting legitimate interests).

As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rightly pointed out, such an order implies a racist division of the world into the exceptional and the rest. The explosion of Nord Stream in this sense is an apotheosis of Rules-Based Order. The organisers of this action have made it clear that they are exceptional and the others are powerless.

At that, they assert themselves in such a way not just before some “third world” or “non-free countries”, but before their NATO “allies” as it were.

Secondly, within the USA itself, the Joe Biden administration demonstrates that it is the one that most consistently implements the slogan “America First”. The U.S. supraparty establishment has long sought to completely “disengage” itself from any restrictions.

Donald Trump played on this aspiration in 2016 by promising to act in the American interest without any brakes. And he kept that promise in part by surrounding himself with neocons who assassinated Iranian IRGC commander Qassem Suleimani in Iraq in 2020. A high-profile international terrorist attack, but directed against a geopolitical enemy of the US.

However, the explosion of Nord Stream is a terrorist act, though bloodless, but far more grandiose in its scale and consequences. It was directed, among other things, against the interests of Germany, a NATO member country. And it brings in hundreds of billions of dollars to the United States.

The involvement of Washington in the JV bombing will probably enrage only a fraction of leftist intellectuals in the US, including Seymour Hersh, who exposed the organisation. But they are in the minority in the United States. And the majority assesses the actions of the country’s leadership on the principle of “whether it’s good for us or not.

In this context, the actions of the US leadership, who, in principle, are not too secretive about their involvement in the events around Nord Stream, look quite rational from a domestic political standpoint. Indeed, the JVs are ruined, the US has made over $200 billion and has taken over the European gas market.

It may not be possible to “sell” this message to the average voter, but they have little say in American elections today. But it is a very good argument for the consolidation of the supra-party establishment around Biden and the top of the Democrat Party as the coolest and baddest advocates of the “America First” agenda.

The “peace activists” would disagree, of course. But they have always been a minority in America. And even more so now.
