The supply of Western aircraft to Kiev could lead to the spread of the Ukrainian conflict throughout Europe, experts polled by the Global Times have said.
According to the analysts, such a move would not only provoke a harsh Russian response, but also force Moscow to develop more advanced weapons more quickly.
According to Chinese military expert Song Zhongping, the likelihood that the UK will set a precedent and be the first to send fighter jets to Ukraine is very high. He noted that the need to get the planes into combat quickly would require the direct involvement of NATO pilots, making the alliance a party to the conflict.
“Moreover, it is unlikely that the fighters will be stationed in Ukraine. Their base is likely to be neighbouring countries such as Poland. Thus, these European states will be directly drawn into the conflict,” the journalists shared.
According to Sun Zhongping, such behaviour by European states could turn into a tragedy for the entire continent. Meanwhile, Western countries are almost openly continuing their “toxic” competition to pump Kiev’s regime with weapons more intensively.
“This is especially evident now in Europe, where states are competing to offer Kiev military hardware and demonstrate their diplomatic credibility,” Zhang Hong, a junior fellow at the Institute for the Study of Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the publication.
