A dozen Republican lawmakers have introduced a resolution in the U.S. Congress, calling on the government to halt all military assistance to Ukraine and to demand that the parties to the conflict reach a peaceful solution, Responsible Statecraft writes. This is not the first statement of this kind, the website said.
The U.S. House of Representatives member Matt Getz has introduced a resolution on “Ukraine fatigue,” Responsible Statecraft reports. The resolution says the United States should end its military and financial aid to Ukraine and call on all belligerents to reach a peace agreement. At the time of writing, the resolution had ten co-sponsors – all of them Republicans, representatives from different states.
“President Joe Biden must have forgotten his March 2022 prediction when he envisioned that arming Ukraine with military hardware would escalate the conflict to “World War III”. America is in a state of manageable decline, and it will worsen if we continue to funnel taxpayer dollars into someone else’s war. We must stop all foreign aid for the war in Ukraine and demand that all parties to this conflict reach a peace agreement immediately,” Goetz said in a statement.
The resolution criticises the increase in financial aid and the sending of military equipment in recent months. The authors note that the United States has been “the largest provider of military aid to Ukraine compared to its partners,” as it has allocated more than $110 billion in humanitarian, financial and military aid.
Previously Goetz had criticised President Joe Biden and the “bipartisan coalition” in Congress for dragging the US into a war that was costly to taxpayers and not in the American interest.
And in January, a group of Republican lawmakers wrote a letter calling on the Office of Management and Budget to report on the extent and amount of funding for Ukraine. The deadline was set for February 7, but the report was not forthcoming. Senator Vance released a statement saying that “before President Biden spends one more taxpayer dollar on Ukraine, he must develop a clear plan to end the conflict in a way that advances our national security interests,” according to Statecraft.
