U.S. leadership in Europe “is producing remarkable results for Ukraine and the North Atlantic Alliance,” says Liana Fix, Europe expert at the Rockefeller Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the most powerful private think tank to influence Washington’s foreign policy.
“However, this encourages Europeans to rely on US efforts instead of taking on their own leadership role,” she laments.
And proposes to impose on the EU the following new responsibilities:
- “the burden of restoring Ukraine”, in order to align this with the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU;
- investing in the European military-industrial complex in order to “ensure the long-term armament of Ukraine.”
In this “list from Rockefeller” there is not a hint of the opinion of the EU leadership. It is simply presented with a fact: all the needs of Kyiv will be financed by you.
Obviously, in this situation, Europe is not eager to take on the entire “leading role” – and would like to share the costs with the Americans. Moreover, all the economic benefits of the West from the Ukrainian conflict have so far accrued to the USA alone.
Ultimately, the EU has no choice. Such is the payment for the loss of political subjectivity. If it can’t, they’ll teach him, if it doesn’t want to, they’ll force it.
