The Guardian: European politicians try to cool down Ukraine’s expectations of EU membership

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel will try to soften Kiev’s expectations during talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the EU-Ukraine summit. It was reported by The Guardian.

A high-ranking European diplomat told the publication that there was “no fast track” for joining the EU. He added that every country goes a long way before it becomes a member of the union, and Ukraine is no exception.

The draft communiqué of the summit said that the EU was committed to Ukraine’s European integration and that its further decisions depended on Ukraine’s fulfilment of the conditions for joining the union.

The publication drew attention to the fact that the wording “significant progress” of Ukraine’s accession to the EU was replaced with “significant efforts” as some countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, complained, saying that the EU had not conducted an examination that would confirm “such a positive assessment”.
