Stoltenberg expresses confidence that Finland and Sweden will join NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has expressed confidence that Finland and Sweden will join the North Atlantic Alliance despite the strained relations between Stockholm and Ankara.

In an interview with the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Stoltenberg noted that Stockholm and Helsinki were undergoing “the fastest accession process in modern NATO history.

Asked about the possibility of their accession because of Sweden’s strained relations with Turkey, the secretary-general expressed confidence that these countries would join NATO.

Meanwhile, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey would not approve Sweden’s bid to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
