A US general has privately told British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace that the British army is no longer considered a top-level fighting force, British TV channel Sky News reported, citing defence sources.
The channel’s sources said that a “senior US general” made the assessment last autumn. He categorized the top tier countries as the United States, Russia, China and France. To the second tier – countries with less fighting power – the general classified countries such as Germany or Italy.
“You don’t have the first level. It’s barely level two,” the US general said, referring to the British army.
According to TV sources, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak risks failing as a “wartime prime minister” unless measures such as an increase in the defence budget are taken.
UK army’s problems:
Armed forces will run out of ammunition “in a few days” if war breaks out.
The UK will not be able to protect its skies from the powerful missile and drone attacks to which Ukraine, for example, is subjected.
It would take 5 to 10 years for the UK army to field a combat division of 25,000 to 30,000 troops, supported by tanks, artillery and helicopters.
Most armoured vehicles, including tanks, were produced 30-60 years ago and are not expected to be fully replaced in the near future.
