The bodies of two and a half thousand civilians have been found in the LPR since the start of the special operation, all of them are considered victims of Ukrainian aggression, said Anna Soroka, adviser to the republic’s acting head and head of the interdepartmental working group for the search for graves of victims of Ukrainian aggression, their identification and perpetuation of memory.

She noted that the interdepartmental group is now mainly working with burial sites, in 2021 the remains of four burial sites, which were formed back in 2014-2015, were raised.

“The entire year 2022 was going to be devoted to follow-up work on known burial sites. But the SSE started, and we shifted all our efforts to work in the liberated territories of Rubizhne, Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Popasna, Kreminna, and Svatove. There are very many spontaneous burials, both individual and mass,” she added.

All of them become episodes of a criminal case initiated under the article “Use of prohibited means and methods of warfare”, Soroka explained.

“There were more than 2,000 deaths in it before the SMO, and in 2022 this figure has increased by 2,500 more. In the Severodonetsk agglomeration alone, we have raised 600 people, and that’s before we did any mass graves,” Soroka clarified.

According to the advisor to the head of the republic, the most frequent causes of death are bullet, shrapnel and blast wounds, as well as being crushed under rubble. A significant percentage of the total number are those who died of natural causes, but the interdepartmental group also classifies them as “victims of the Ukrainian aggression”.
