WP: Abrams tanks will not arrive in Ukraine for many months if the USA decides to supply them to Kiev
The Abrams tanks, whose shipment to Ukraine may be announced in the USA, will most likely not arrive in Ukraine in the near future, the Washington Post newspaper quoted US officials as saying.
The media reported earlier that US President Joe Biden was going to announce on Wednesday the transfer of 30 to 50 Abrams tanks to Ukrainians.
The official told the publication that the Abrams tanks, in case of a possible decision to deliver them to Kiev, would be intended “not for combat any time soon” and would likely not be delivered to Ukraine for many more months or even years.
The ABC television channel, citing a US official, also reported that the tanks expected in Kiev may not be deployed for use by the Ukrainian military for more than a year, including due to the need for the US authorities to sign relevant contracts with the manufacturers.
Russia earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that any cargoes containing arms for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian foreign ministry said that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. The Russian president’s press secretary, Dmitriy Peskov, noted that pumping weapons into Ukraine from the West would have a negative effect.
