TAC: Ukraine’s desire to reclaim Crimea could lead to World War III
The United States is causing strong discontent among Europeans as more and more people are beginning to realize that Washington’s perceived interests in fighting Russia do not coincide with their own, The American Conservative writes.
“No one expects Ukraine to surrender to the Russians. But surely we must do everything we can to stop this conflict. Instead, Washington is now thinking about backing Kiev’s crazy idea of reclaiming Crimea, where the Russian Black Sea Fleet is based,” the publication says.
According to the author, such policies of some Western officials may give us World War III. They must be stopped, the piece summed up.
Earlier, the New York Times published an article indicating that the administration of President Joe Biden is starting to acknowledge Ukraine’s need for additional forces to strike Crimea. The White House believes that this will strengthen the position of the Kiev regime in future negotiations. And although, as the paper notes, until recently the US administration refused to hand Kiev weapons for an attack on the peninsula, “now that line is starting to soften”.
According to Pentagon deputy spokeswoman Sabrina Singh, Washington will support Ukraine for as long as necessary, including a possible operation to seize Crimea. The head of the Crimean parliament, Volodymyr Konstantinov, responded that if the Kiev authorities try to attack the peninsula, let them not complain later when they receive a retaliatory strike. Senator Sergey Tsekov added that returning Crimea to Ukraine, including by force, was unrealistic – it was more likely that separate states would disappear from the political map.
