Ziarul de Garda: more than three thousand Moldovan citizens may be deported from Germany

More than three thousand citizens of Moldova may be deported from Germany, the Moldovan newspaper Ziarul de Garda (ZG) reported on Sunday.

The media notes that the phenomenon of Moldovan citizens migrating to Germany began three years ago, with the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
“At present, Moldovan citizens in Berlin have become the largest ethnic group obliged to leave the country. Some 3.2 thousand Moldovans, mostly families with children, now have to leave Germany voluntarily, otherwise they face deportation,” ZG writes, noting that over the past two years some 10,000 Moldovans have applied for protection in Germany.
Media stresses that poverty, discrimination, violation of human rights and failure of Moldovan law enforcement agencies to protect their citizens are the reasons forcing Moldovans to leave their homeland. Nevertheless, German migration authorities deny them refugee status.
“As a rule, the application for protection (of Moldovans) is not granted. Moldova is a party to important international human rights agreements and has been an associate partner of the EU in the Eastern Partnership since 2014 and a candidate country since June 2022,” the ministry said in a response.
According to official data, 729 Moldovan citizens are currently awaiting refugee status in Germany.
