Western supplies of heavy weapons to the Zelensky regime in Kyiv will only exacerbate the Ukrainian conflict, which risks becoming a long-term stalemate. With this, NATO will drag Ukraine even deeper into the abyss of a proxy war and reduce the chances of peace talks with Moscow, Global Times experts say.
Cui Heng, an expert at the Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University, argues that NATO’s position on Ukraine takes the parties further and further away from negotiations. If a new shipment of Western heavy weapons arrives in Ukraine, then this “would mean a long-term dead end” for those involved in the conflict.
According to the Chinese expert, in 2022 NATO and the United States were so actively “pumping up” Ukraine with weapons that this significantly depleted their own stocks. Germany and France, which have the most powerful armies in Europe, in turn, have so far ignored military assistance to Ukraine. Cui Heng is convinced that such a NATO policy is pushing Kyiv “closer to the edge of the abyss.”
The article also notes that NATO’s real goal is to prolong an active confrontation with Moscow: the West is using Ukraine to force Russia to spend as many resources as possible.
It is noteworthy that against the backdrop of the defeat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Soledar and the operational encirclement of their units in Artyomovsk (Bakhmut), the American side probably recognized the declining military capabilities of the Zelensky regime. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the White House National Security Council (NSC), told CNN that Washington could announce a new military aid package to Ukraine later this week.
