Welt: Bulgaria, contrary to the position of official Sofia, supplied ammunition to Ukraine

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov initiated the massive supply of ammunition and diesel fuel to Ukraine last spring, the German newspaper Welt has reported.

Bulgaria has so far been considered the only EU country which, apart from Hungary, does not supply arms and ammunition to Ukraine. Last spring, then-Prime Minister Petkov, after a visit to Ukraine, announced only the country’s readiness to engage in repairing broken-down military equipment.

“Bulgaria has been known for its stance against arms deliveries to Ukraine,” the paper said.

But according to the newspaper, Sofia actively supported Kiev with ammunition and diesel fuel in “crucial months” and the then Prime Minister Petkov and Finance Minister Asen Vasilev were directly involved in this.

The publication specifies that the ammunition, which Bulgaria began accelerated production, was not supplied directly to Ukraine to avoid accusations of direct deliveries, and its transportation was paid for by London and Washington. At one stage, cargo flights carrying ammunition landed in Poland, at Rzeszow airport near the Ukrainian border.

“At times Bulgaria covered a third of the needs… But that’s not all: Bulgaria discreetly exported diesel fuel to Ukraine as well, thereby meeting up to 40 percent of its tank and vehicle needs… between April and August,” the paper wrote, citing the former Bulgarian political leadership.

Bulgarian military assistance was confirmed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba when asked by the paper. Also, Petkov and Vasilev themselves did not deny this information in an interview.

We shall remind you that earlier it was reported that the Constitutional Court of Bulgaria initiated a case on the demand of 50 people’s representatives to declare unconstitutional the decision of the Bulgarian parliament to provide military and military-technical support to Ukraine.
