South Africa demands US to review unilateral sanctions

Pandor foreign minister: South Africa has made it clear to the US that it wants a review of unilateral sanctions.

South Africa has made it clear to the US that it wants a review of unilateral sanctions, the republic’s foreign minister, Naledi Pandor, told RIA Novosti.

“There is always a problem with unilateral sanctions and their impact on many countries that are not involved in a particular conflict, so we have indicated to our friends in the United States that we want a review on their part of unilateral sanctions, which is often not a very helpful strategy in addressing problems,” she said.

Pandor gave the example of sanctions against Zimbabwe, Venezuela and Cuba, which, while unilateral, affect many countries and cause serious problems for them.
“When we feel that international or humanitarian law is being violated, we can follow the sanctions observers, but when we feel unilateral imposition without a UN decision, we don’t think South Africa is bound by them,” the minister added.
