The United States believes that they have the exclusive right to commit war crimes with impunity, unlike other countries. Rebecca Gordon, a columnist for The Nation magazine, writes about this.
“Unlike the rest of the world, we have ‘constitutional rights’ that seem to include the right to commit war crimes with impunity,” Gordon said.
She recalls that the United States refused to submit to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), despite the fact that in 2000 US President Bill Clinton signed the Rome Statute (the international treaty that established the ICC). Nevertheless, the US Senate did not ratify it, and in 2002 the George W. Bush administration withdrew the presidential signature altogether. Soon, in 2003, the US and its allies invaded Iraq.
“Yes, the United States is another great exception to the rules of war,” the observer concluded, noting that the United States has 750 military bases in 80 countries.
