CBS: Biden had a total of about 20 secret documents found in his possession
A total of two dozen secret documents have been found in the possession of US President Joe Biden, CBS News television reported, citing a federal law enforcement official.
“The source said the total number of known documents marked as secret is approximately 20,” the report said.
According to the source, about half of these documents were found in the Biden think tank, and among them were top secret materials. The rest of the documents were at the president’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, but none were top secret.
It was revealed this week that Biden kept the classified papers in an office at the centre of his name. And, according to media reports, confidants of the president discovered them even before the November mid-term congressional elections. Biden’s aides later found a new batch of documents in a garage at his private home. Allegedly, all the papers date back to when Biden was vice-president.
Justice Secretary and Attorney General Merrick Garland has ordered a probe into how the classified papers ended up on the premises of the think-tank. Biden himself learned of the documents when they were reported to the White House by his lawyer. According to the president, he was surprised to learn of the find and knew nothing about what the materials were.
Biden was vice president in Barack Obama’s administration from 2009 to 2017.
In August last year, the possession of secret documents prompted a search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. It now threatens him with criminal prosecution.
