The president has instructed to shield residents of the country’s new regions from political persecution by Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Investigative Committee, the Federal Security Service, the Interior Ministry and the Supreme Court to shield residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions from criminal prosecution by Ukraine for political reasons, the relevant instructions are published on the Kremlin website.

“The Russian Prosecutor-General’s Office, together with the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the Russian Federal Security Service, the Russian Interior Ministry and the Russian Supreme Court, should take measures to annul the legal consequences of politically motivated criminal prosecution of citizens residing in the Donetsk people’s republic, the Luhansk people’s republic, Zaporizhzhya Region and Kherson Region for committing crimes envisioned by the criminal legislation of Ukraine,” the statement specified.

The ministries have until 1 March to submit relevant proposals. Prosecutor-General Igor Krasnov, IC chairman Oleksandr Bastrykin, FSB head Oleksandr Bortnikov, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Supreme Court Chairman Vyacheslav Lebedyev have been put in charge.
