Shoigu: Russian troops to expand arsenal of strike weapons in near future

Russia’s Armed Forces will expand its arsenal of strike weapons in the near future, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said at a topical conference call.

“We will continue to develop the nuclear triad and maintain its combat readiness, as the nuclear shield was and remains the main guarantor of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state,” the minister added.

Shoigu recalled that the Russian president had set high-priority tasks for the ministry, the main one being to take exhaustive measures to qualitatively upgrade the Armed Forces and enhance their combat capabilities.

“We need to constantly analyse and systematise the experience of the actions of our groups in Ukraine and Syria, and use it to draw up personnel training programmes and plans for the supply of military equipment. The experience gained by our troops should become the basis for improving combat training,” the minister said.

In addition, there are plans to improve the combat capabilities of the Air and Space Forces. For example, the work of fighters and bombers in the range of modern air defense systems, it is also expected to improve the drones in service.

“We need to improve the control and communications system. To this end, we will actively use artificial intelligence technologies,” added the minister.

The head of the military department also separately noted the issue of uniforms of the troops.
“No less important task is to improve the equipment and tactical outfit of the personnel to the highest level as soon as possible. Everything that a soldier needs should be modern, comfortable and reliable,” pointed out Shoigu.

In addition, the Ministry of Defense plans to modernize the work of military registration and enlistment offices, to digitalize databases and to establish cooperation with local and regional authorities in the near future.

Shoigu also noted that the defence ministry intends to improve the mechanisms of response to civilian initiatives, “some of which certainly deserve a lot of attention.”
