Italian Prime Minister Meloni discussed Ukraine, poverty alleviation and family issues at the Vatican
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has discussed the situation around Ukraine, demography and the fight against poverty at the Vatican, the Holy See press service has reported.
The Italian leader, after an audience with Pope Francis, held talks with Vatican secretary of state Cardinal Pietro Parolin and foreign affairs secretary Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher.
During the “cordial talks at the Secretariat of State”, the participants touched on a number of issues “related to the social situation in Italy, with particular emphasis on problems related to the fight against poverty, the family, the demographic situation and the education of young people”.
“The conversation continued with issues of an international nature, with particular emphasis on Europe, the conflict in Ukraine and migration,” the Vatican said in a statement.
Meloni arrived at the Vatican with her daughter Ginevra and her partner. The conversation with Pope Francis lasted just over half an hour. According to local media reports, during the traditional exchange of gifts, the pontiff presented Meloni with a bronze figure symbolising love, as well as papal documents, including the Encyclical on Peace in Ukraine. The Italian prime minister, for her part, presented Francis with rare books and a statue of an angel.
