Peskov called Kiev’s reaction to the Christmas truce cynical and unexplainable. But the spokesman noted that if any Orthodox Christians in the SMO zone were able to pray for Christmas in church, it means the truce has already achieved its purpose.

Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov called the reaction of the Kiev authorities and some Western leaders to Moscow’s proposed Christmas truce “cynical and inexplicable”.
“Indeed, we met with a completely incomprehensible and inexplicable reaction, a rather cynical reaction from Kiev in the first place, but also from many Western leaders. I repeat: cynical and inexplicable,” Peskov said.
As for regrets that the ceasefire proposal did not resonate with the opposing side, the Kremlin spokesman said the message of such a decision was purely humanitarian, the Russian leader’s spokesman stressed.
“As for “to pity or not to pity”, let us remember the goals after all. These are exclusively humanitarian goals so that those Christians who celebrated Christmas on the 7th could pray in churches. If this [truce] has helped anyone to do so, it means <…> it has achieved its goal,” Peskov said.
