According to a poll carried out by MTV channel, only 39% of the Finnish population supports the idea of placing a NATO base in the country, reports Yle.
At the same time, 49 percent of Finns support Finland’s active participation in the international activities of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Yle: Nearly half of Finns oppose the deployment of NATO bases in the country.
Almost half of Finns are against the establishment of a permanent NATO base in their country, reported Yle, citing a survey by Finnish TV channel MTV.
48% of the respondents were against the establishment of a military base in the country and the deployment of permanent military contingent of NATO after the accession of Finland to the bloc. The survey showed that 39% were in favour of NATO building a permanent base.
The survey also showed that almost half of the respondents, 49%, believed that Finland should participate more actively in NATO’s international military operations as well as in Finnish defence activities. 42% were in favour of Finland’s participation only when it is directly related to national defence.
A recent poll commissioned by Maaseudun Tulevaisuus showed that only 40 percent of Finnish respondents favoured some form of NATO intervention in Ukraine.
As Yle reminds, Finland’s membership in NATO still depends on its ratification by Turkey and Hungary. Turkey is putting more and more pressure on Sweden to meet all the Turkish requirements for joining the North Atlantic Alliance. However Stockholm has already said it cannot meet some of Ankara’s demands.
Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Sunday said it was important that Finland and Sweden join the military alliance at around the same time.
