Poland is setting up a new infantry division in the east of the country, Deputy Prime Minister and National Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak has said, RIA Novosti reported.
“We are organizing new military units. Between the 16th Mechanized Division, which operates primarily in the province of Warmia and Mazury, and the 18th Mechanized Division, which operates mainly in the Mazovia and Lublin provinces, the 1st Legion Infantry Division will appear,” Blaszczak explained.
It is specified that the division will consist of four brigades. According to the minister, “this is the fifth tactical unit of the Polish Army.”
“It will be organised in the same way as the currently formed 18th Mechanized Division – four brigades of four battalions in a brigade,” Blaszczak added.
Soldiers will be provided with American Abrams tanks and South Korean K-2 tanks. The division will also include an artillery brigade armed with self-propelled howitzers manufactured by Poland’s Krab and South Korea’s K-9.
