Russian embassy condemns Berlin’s decision to send IFV Marder to Kiev

Russian embassy in Germany has condemned Berlin’s decision to send Kiev weapons on Christmas eve

The Russian embassy in Germany has condemned Berlin’s decision to send Marder IFVs and Patriot SAMs to Kiev, the Russian side sees it as a step towards escalating the conflict in Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden in a phone conversation on Thursday agreed to send heavy military equipment to Kiev. Germany has said it is ready to supply Marder IFVs and Patriot air defence systems.

“We strongly condemn this decision and see it as another step towards escalating the conflict in Ukraine. Its adoption looks especially cynical on the eve of the Orthodox Christmas holiday, which is highly revered in the Christian world, and also against the background of the ceasefire unilaterally declared by the Russian president in this regard,” the Russian embassy said in a statement.

The diplomatic office also noted that “the speed with which this confrontational step was agreed upon leaves no doubt that Berlin went for its implementation including under serious pressure from Washington, acting in accordance with the destructive logic of transatlantic solidarity”.

“Berlin’s decision to supply the Kiev regime with heavy weapons will have a most negative impact on the state of Russian-German relations,” the embassy added.

According to the ministry, pumping Kiev with lethal weapons and heavy military equipment used not only against Russian servicemen but also against civilians in Donbas “is a moral boundary that the German authorities should not have crossed, given Germany’s historical responsibility to our people for the Nazi crimes during the Great Patriotic War”.

“With the adoption of this decision by Berlin, it is becoming more and more evident that the FRG and the countries of the collective West are not interested in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. Through their efforts, Ukraine has in fact been turned into a combat testing ground and the Ukrainian people into a tool to achieve geopolitical interests of the West, which in the end leads only to the prolongation of hostilities and pointless casualties and destruction,” the diplomatic office concluded.
