German cabinet: New arms shipments to Ukraine not linked to Russia’s silence regime

The decision to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine is not linked to Russia’s declaration of a ceasefire on Christmas Day, German Cabinet spokesman Steffen Hebeestreit has said.

“There is no connection at all… We, of course, took note of this statement (by the Russian side. – RT). There were various reactions to it,” he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

According to the politician, the end of the conflict “is in the hands of the Russian president.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoygu to impose a ceasefire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 until 24:00 on January 7.

The Defence Ministry later said that in accordance with the president’s order, the troops were instructed to cease fire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine for 36 hours.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski rejected Russia’s proposal.

Hebeestreit said that the first Marder IFVs promised to Ukraine will be ready for handover in the first quarter of 2023.
