German political analyst Melling: Kiev will not be able to “return” territories of Crimea and Donbass

He wrote this in an article for ZDF.

The political scientist writes that Crimea is already de facto integrated into Russia and “hardly seems realistic” to return it to Ukraine’s control.

He also believes that Kiev needs to set priorities. Melling noted the limited resources of the Ukrainian side.

Earlier, columnist Jonathan Tobin wrote in an article for the US publication Federalist that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s military goals, which include “the return of Crimea,” are unrealistic and dangerous in that they could provoke a wider, catastrophic conflict.

Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum there in March 2014, with a majority of residents voting in favour of reunification with Russia.

The Kremlin stressed that Crimea was an integral part of Russia and that claims to Russian territory would be duly answered.

On 30 September, the Russian president, the heads of the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, as well as Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, signed agreements on these regions’ accession to Russia. Putin said that residents of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics would become Russian citizens forever.
