There is no reason to fight the Russian language amid the conflict in Ukraine. The President of Estonia, Alar Karis, spoke about this in an interview with the ETV + TV channel.

The President of Estonia, answering a reporter’s question, noted that he does not agree with those who say that in connection with the situation in Ukraine, Estonians should turn their attention to other languages, and not to Russian.

“I believe that language is a tool. And I see no reason to fight with languages. The Russian language itself is a cultural language. And they believe that the Russian language should be taught even earlier than other languages. This is all because Russian is a rather complicated language, even because it has a different alphabet. I see no reason to fight the Russian language, just as we have no reason to fight Russian literature,” the President of Estonia noted.

He also said that because of the conflict in Ukraine, attitudes towards the language are changing.

“First of all, the Ukrainians, who previously spoke Russian, refuse the Russian language. But this is a temporary phenomenon. This is the reaction that the conflict in Ukraine is producing today. It’s not worth blaming the language for something”, Karis emphasized.
