German government says Germany remains in contact with Russia

German authorities continue to maintain diplomatic contacts with Russia at various levels, German government spokeswoman Christiane Hofmann has said.

Hofmann recalled that European Union leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are in direct contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“And on other levels, it goes without saying that contacts are taking place,” TASS quoted her as saying.

Hoffmann added that there is “no silence” between Russia and Germany.

On December 2, Scholz said Europe should return to a pre-conflict “peaceful order” in relations with Russia and address “common security issues” if Putin is willing to abandon “aggression” against his neighbours.
