The Washington Post sounds the alarm over Europe’s energy disaster

The Washington Post says that after almost 10 months of conflict in Ukraine, with temperatures plunging and energy costs soaring, Europeans are forced to turn down the temperature in their homes. For many of them it’s a desperate attempt to cut their huge heating bills to pay the rent.

The newspaper reports that even in relatively affluent Western Europe, people have begun to conserve heat en masse. Some of the most vulnerable social groups are turning it off completely. At the same time Europe’s economic heartland, Germany, regulates the temperature in workplaces, French politicians are photographed wearing turtlenecks and winter jackets in a ridiculous attempt to set an example. In the UK, fire chiefs in London felt it necessary to warn citizens against starting open fires at home.

To keep out the cold, some Europeans decided to spend the long winter in warmer parts of the continent, such as Spain. But even Spain has restricted heating to 19°C.

In Britain there is concern that people are risking their health to save money on heating. The Washington Post quotes Sarah Chapman, a manager at a food bank in south London. He says bank staff are particularly worried about those using prepayment meters – about 4 million people.

“We actually see people who have nothing on their meter. So, the lights go out, the fridge goes out and they lose whatever crumbs they have in the fridge. Families live in the same room to save on heat and light. The health risks are huge,” she concludes.
