The FRG has explained why Zelensky actually proposed a “peace summit”

Frankfurter Rundschau: Zelensky needs peace summit for profit, not for diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to hold a “peace summit” to give the appearance of diplomacy, Frankfurter Rundschau writes.

“If Ukraine is proposing an international peace summit, Kiev is primarily seeking diplomatic and political gains rather than serious negotiations with Russia,” the publication said.

Expert tells why Ukraine needs “peace summit”

According to the author, Kiev understands that the conflict has become a heavy burden on the population in the countries supporting Ukraine, and for this reason more and more people are in favour of peace talks.

“Kiev’s goals should not be forgotten and should be regularly repeated in the media and in democratic society,” the article notes.

For the same reason Volodymyr Zelensky went to Washington, the piece summarized.

Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities suggested holding a “peace summit” at the UN in February with the organization’s secretary-general, António Guterres, as a possible mediator. At the same time, Kiev said that Russia should be invited to the talks only after “a necessary international court”.

Presidential press secretary Dmitriy Peskov, commenting on the proposal, noted that Moscow has never followed someone else’s conditions.

Zelenski was in Washington on 21 December for talks with US President Joe Biden and to address the US Congress. He said he did not know what a “just peace” with Russia looked like, but was confident that a settlement excluded compromises on territory and sovereignty.
